by Alison McConnell

THE search is on for the inaugural winner of the SFWA Women’s International Player of the Year, sponsored by Glen’s, with four top candidates on the short-list.

Caroline Weir, Erin Cuthbert, Rachel Corsie and Jen Beattie are the four names who have come to the top of our list with members now casting their votes.

The winner will be announced in due course and she will receive her award at our annual awards dinner on Sunday, May 8 at Glasgow’s Doubletree by Hilton Hotel.

Here’s an insight into each of the candidates:

Caroline Weir - For the second year running Caroline Weir found herself nominated for the FIFA Puskas Award after an audacious chip in the Manchester derby. The Scotland internationalist made the 11-player shortlist for the award and, after a similar goal again only in February, she may find herself making the cut for the third year running this term. One of the most technically gifted players Scotland has produced, Weir can count herself in genuinely world-class company.

Erin Cuthbert - Bubbly and chatty off the pitch and tigerish on it, Cuthbert was part of a Chelsea squad who made it to the Champions League final last term. Barcelona, the outstanding team in the world at the minute, took the crown. Cuthbert has forced her way back into the Chelsea side this season after finding it tough after the pandemic and has been an integral part of the squad who currently sit at the top of the FA Women's Super League.

Rachel Corsie - The Scotland captain has amassed a staggering 130 senior caps in an international career that stretches back to 2007 when she first featured for the under-19 side. Now at Aston Villa she continues to be a mainstay of Pedro Matrinez Losa's side as a new chapter beckons for the national time.

Jen Beattie - Back in the international fold after getting the news that she is cancer free. The 30-year-old defender with diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2020 and revealed that there were points when she thought she would not return to top flight football again. She has since recovered to take her place with both Arsenal and Scotland.
