Craig Brown 1940-2023

The SFWA are saddened to learn of the passing of Craig Brown, aged 82.

Craig was presented with our Lifetime Achievement award in 2019. A helpful, engaging character during his illustrious career for club and country, he will be greatly missed by all in Scottish football.

The thoughts of the Association are with Craig’s family and friends at this time and Chick Young, SFWA President, has paid his own tribute to the former Scotland manager.

Sometimes wee men stand huge in our game.

Bantamweight Broon cast a massive shadow.

We’ve all lost a friend.

The Tartan Army, huge names in the business and those of us in the scribbling and talking game.

As president of the Scottish Football Writers Association, I don’t need to take a snap poll of the members to know how we feel. We’ve lost a pal.

Craig understood how the world works and those of us who deal with the back pages were never toiling for co-operation.

He was a diamond of a man.

I first got to know him when he was manager of Clyde at the end of a playing career mainly with Dundee after injury at Rangers abbreviated his time at Ibrox.

I hope I remained his buddy till the end.

Today’s news has been waiting in the wings for a few weeks now.

He had passion for football and an understanding of its intricacies and a sense of man management that always meant he was officer material.

And an impish sense of humour.

Modest too.

But you didn’t mess him around. Not at your peril.

A thousand memories. I travelled the world with him…and trust me, he charmed nations oceans away.

Speed well, Craig. See you at the far post.
