59th SFWA Awards

The Scottish Football Writers’ Association held their 59th annual awards dinner at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Glasgow on Sunday, May 18.

Members and guests were treated to two excellent guest speakers - Gordon Strachan and John Gahagan - in the company of some of the most famous faces in Scottish football.

Celtic forward Daizen Maeda was crowned our Player of the Year for season 2024/25. Daizen was unfortunately unable to attend the dinner due to personal circumstances but manager Brendan Rodgers was able to collect the prize on his behalf.

“I think he's a worthy recipient of the award,” Rodgers said. “I know he's picked up many, but I know this is something that means a lot to him.

”Obviously, for him, sadly, he's not able to be here, but he passes on his thanks and gratitude. He probably epitomises the ultimate team player. There's not many forwards in world football who are as good off the ball in terms of his pressing, but he's really added his attacking output this season with his numbers being exceptional.”

Rodgers picked up the William Hill Manager of the Year award as he looks to lead Celtic to a domestic clean sweep with victory over Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final this weekend.

Lennon Miller made the trip back down the A9 from Dingwall to receive the DoubleTree by Hilton Young Player of the Year in what is set to be his final term as a Motherwell player.

Scotland manager Steve Clarke collected the William Hill SFWA Men’s International Player of the Year prize on behalf of Scott McTominay and Melissa Andreatta picked up the SFWA Women’s International Player of the Year for Erin Cuthbert.

Joe Jordan joined president Chick Young on stage after being recognised with the William Hill Lifetime Achievement award as he recalled his glittering career for club and country.

And James Hunter took home the Media Relations prize for the second time in three years as St Mirren were acknowledged by members for their work with the Press over the season.

Our thanks go to sponsors William Hill for their continued backing of the event and to DoubleTree by Hilton, as well as to all members and guests who attended and enjoyed their evening.
